South Coast NSW History Story
'Vis', 1980
The Vis was a 186-ton, 26-metre , Port Lincoln-based tuna boat. She was ‘taking water astern and went down in 60 seconds at about 9.30pm’ on Wednesday 22nd October 1980 when 130 miles off Jervis Bay in what were described as reasonable weather conditions. The winds at the time were about 11 knots. After it was discovered she was taking on water, the vessel was hit with three big waves striking the vessel in succession, forcing the crew to abandon ship. Eight crew members survived and were taken to Ulladulla by another fishing boat. Two men lost their lives.
