'Sarah Beattie', 1888

Categories:   South Coast Shipwrecks

The schooner Sarah Beattie, of 42 tons and built in 1839 at Brisbane Water and owned by Thos. Moorehead, went ashore on the beach at the north head of the Wodonga River at 8 a.m. on November 16th 1888. At the time the seas were very heavy. Captain Waggett gave evidence to a Marine Board enquiry that at the time he was trying to put to sea, and the wind was favourable for getting away. The wind, however, fell off and he anchored ; but the anchor dragged, and the vessel went ashore in the surf. The Sarah Beattie was laden with timber, and all the cargo was later saved; but the vessel became a total wreck. There was a crew of four on board, and no one was lost or injured. – from Sydney Morning Herald, 3rd December 2888, and Evening News, 4th December 1888.
