South Coast NSW History Story
LAKE TABOURIE
In 1828 the government surveyor Thomas Florance mapped the area whilst on an expedition charting the surrounding coast and named the area ‘Tobowerry’. Other early recordings of the name included ‘Toboree’, 'Tobourea Creek’ and 'Touboure’. The meaning of the name is unknown.
It seems the area developed after becoming a popular camping location with, at some point, the NRMA noting that camping sites were available at Lake Tabourie, it was a safe swimming area for children, it provided good fishing, and there was a nearby ocean beach.
The village would have benefitted from the construction in 1937 of the Cockwhy deviation (south of the village) on the main road linking Ulladulla with Batemans Bay.
